Our Special Day

2
Today is the 26th February 2015. Just another day but to G & I a very special date. On the 26th February 2005 we first met in my University town of Aberystwyth. On the 26th February 2010 we got married. So as you can tell it’s quite an important date on the calendar in our house. This year we are marking 10 years of being together (we had a slight blip around 2007 but we like to gloss over that) and 5 years of being married. Like everyone else says about their wedding day, ours was perfect. No, really it was and now I’m going to bore you with the details. Let’s admit it; everyone loves a good wedding story.

We got married in my childhood church in Birmingham. It was a very cold windy day but there isn’t much more you can expect from the weather at the end of February. My colour scheme was shades of purple and cream and the church was decorated with white roses to match this. I wore a simple ivory dress from Jasmine Bridal; I picked it mainly because of the straps and was so glad I did as I was so comfortable in it all day. I wore a matching veil which came down from the back of my up-do and purple shoes! Yes, I wore beautiful Debenhams purple shoes under my dress, I think they were my favourite part of my outfit to be honest. The little flash of colour was great under my dress and they became the focus of many of my favourite wedding photos. My bridesmaids wore lilac dresses which my chief bridesmaid found at a Littlewoods outlet for a bargain £10 (Who even knew Littlewoods still existed?!). They might have been cheap but they were exactly what I wanted. We all carried bouquets of white and purple roses with a few thistles added in. My hubby, his best man and ushers all wore simple black suits with lilac ties – very smart.

The church service was beautiful and I only managed to trip over once when I was walking back out to the church after signing the register.  It was the most amazing feeling walking down the aisle with my Dad ( I am an only child so this was a big deal for him!) towards my husband to be and feeling so sure about the life I was about to start with him. Don’t worry I have sick buckets on stand by for all the really cringey smooshy bits but if you can’t be a bit lovey dovey on your anniversary when can you?!

Church service done and a few rather windy photos taken we headed to The Manor Hotel in Meriden which just so happens to be the centre of England – useless fact. We travelled to the hotel in beautiful wedding cars (G will go mad when he reads this that I can’t tell you the make and model of these cars), these were made even more special as one of them was the car my parents travelled to their wedding in and the second was the one my inlaws used for theirs.

At the Manor Hotel we had many many photos taken all of which I treasure. I think I became quite a hardcore bride as I had my pictures taken in very cold conditions, I’m pretty sure the photographer will have photoshopped my red nose out of many of the photos. We had a wonderful wedding breakfast of soup, lamb and profiteroles. The food was just as we wanted – plenty of it, tasty and filling. No fancy tiny portions for us I’m afraid. After the (rather emotional) speeches we cut our beautiful wedding cake which had layers of sponge and fruit cake covered in icing and marshmallows!!

Then onto the reception. We had a good old traditional knees up. A friend did the DJ-ing for us playing from a list of music that we had chosen, then we took to the dance floor for our first dance to “We’ve Only Just Begun” by The Carpenters. Back to the food again, it got better. For our buffet we had sausage and bacon sandwiches with potato wedges. Yum is all I can say. It was perfect. The night was filled with celebrations, plenty of dancing and a jolly good time.

Every year on our anniversary we sit and watch back our wedding DVD and remember our perfect day. 5 years have gone by in a haze of moving house, trying for a baby, having a baby and now settling into family life and although there have been a few hiccups along the way I am as happy as a pig in mud. This day was just the beginning of us and I am so happy to be able to share it with you all.
