Last Tuesday we had Little Man’s 2 year development check with the Health Visitors. He had had a similar type of review done at nursery when he turned 2 in October but I thought it was best to go along to this too, to ensure his medical records were kept up to date.
I don’t know why but I always feel these checks are a little bit of an exam for us as parents. I’m sure that isn’t the aim of them at all but when your child is being examined to see what he can do, and it has been me (and nursery) that has been teaching him, I feel a bit nervous. It’s like when you have a performance review at work, your manager checks that you are where you should be on everything and it’s the same for these checks. Although every child develops at a different rate, it is hard not to feel the pressure at this sort of event!
I haven’t had the greatest of experiences with our Health Visitors but was pleasantly surprised with this visit as they made Little Man and us feel at ease straight away. For anyone else that has one of these coming up I thought I would share with you what sort of things they asked Little Man to do.
Building blocks – Little Man was given some little blocks and asked to build a tower with them, they then counted how many he was able to put one on top of another. Unfortunately he was more interested in building a tower and knocking it down but we got there in the end!
Jigsaws – These were the type where Little Man had to fit a shape into the outline on a wooden board. He had to fit in 3 different fishes and do a shapes one too.
Colours – They tested Little Mans knowledge of colours by simply asking him to match the coloured cards with the colours on a piece of paper.
Ball Skills – They asked Little Man to throw a ball and kick it too. As you can imagine he thought this was great being able to play with a ball indoors!
Scenarios – Little Man was asked to point to the picture most relevant to the scenario being described, such as which one of these would you lie down in or which one would you drink out of.
Height & Weight – They checked Little Mans height and weight; he has never been below the 90th percentile and true to form he was 91st percentile for weight and 98th percentile for height – eek!
They then had a chat with me about potty training and whether we had started it. They also gave their health and safety talk about making sure you don’t let him wander into the oven etc.
Little Man came out fine from this check and they were happy with him which I was of course relieved about. I passed my parenting exam thankfully!! I hope this helps anyone that has one of these coming up; it really wasn’t as bad as I thought!
Have a lovely day!
