Our First Christmas Concert – Notelets CBSO

Last week I posted about our visit to see We’re Going on a Bear Hunt on stage that my Dad had booked for us to see. My Dad very kindly also got us tickets to go and see a performance called Notelets at the CBSO Centre in Birmingham.

When I was little one of our family traditions around Christmas was to go to a Christmas concert of some kind. It was the best way to start the festive season and my Dad wanted to help me continue that tradition in my family.

Christmas has already been so magical this year as Little Man has really got to grips with it and has been infectiously excited for Christmas. Going to this performance really added to the festive feeling.

If you are from around these parts, you will probably have heard of the CBSO – The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. They are an amazing group of people that make beautiful music. They regularly hold events for the little people too which is a great way of introducing music to children. As I mentioned, we attended one of their Notelets performances (specially designed for toddlers) called Christmas Crackers.

When we got there there were craft activities laid out for the kids; they could make bells to join in with the orchestra later. There were also a couple of members of the orchestra in the foyer letting the kids play around on instruments and talking to them about different instruments. Little Man loved it!

Then it was time to go into the performance room. Members of the wind section of the orchestra performed loads of christmas hits giving the kids the chance to sometimes listen quietly, then join in with their bells and also to march to some of the tunes and dance too! It was hosted by a lady who was really good with the kids; talking them through the songs, reading them stories and playing a game with them.

The performance lasted for 45 minutes; the perfect length for toddlers and Little Man was engaged throughout the whole show. He loved hearing some of the songs he had been learning for his nativity play at nursery and being able to join in.

This was our first Notelets performance but I will definitely be taking Little Man to more of them. I love being able to show Little Man live music and how it is made. The CBSO hold different Notelets performances through the year so you can find out more about them here.

Not the best photo but couldn’t really take pics in there. You get the idea though!

Let me know if you have been to this one or have to been to any of the others, I would love to hear what you thought!

That sounds like so much fun. I love the fact that it’s so interactive for the little ones with the bells they can make and use, and the chance to learn a bit about the instruments beforehand.
