Why World Book Day is Really Important
Happy World Book Day one and all!
To most of us parents World Book Day is the dreaded fancy dress day at nursery or school. Not only is it fancy dress but it is themed; book character themed! There is an expectation to not just shove our kids into the nearest Spiderman or Elsa costume but to actually make sure they turn up as something book related. To busy parents; a royal pain in the backside.
Allow me to give you another side of this for a minute though. I am a Librarian so I am of course bias but I hope for a good reason. In today’s society with tablets, games consoles, screens of all kind books can sometimes be forgotten. The joy of reading can sometimes not be passed onto our kids. World Book Day gives us chance to think about it all for a day. It gives us the chance to recognise the worth of our kids sitting down and enjoying a good book or sitting and sharing a story with our smaller kids. I could write you an essay on why reading to our kids is important, how it improves their education, their imagination but I won’t. What I will say is reading is one of the simplest pleasures we can teach our kids and when you see a child sitting reading to themselves throroughly immersed in a book it all becomes very clear.
So this World Book Day, focus a little less on the annoying costume and don’t forget to ask your child where their World Book Day voucher is (probably in the bottom of their school bag). Take them to spend their voucher and share the story with them. It will be worth it.
This year we chose The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Here is Little Man in his outfit this morning!
Happy World Book Day.
