Little Man has been at school for nearly a term now and has started to learn to read. He has really enjoyed learning to read and found a genuine love in looking around and finding he has the ability to sound out a word. This makes me so happy because my background is as a Librarian so I know first hand how important establishing a love of reading is in children. He comes home with a new reading book every day that we have to read together and write about in his reading diary. I don’t just want reading to be associated with school and homework though as sometimes it can seem like a bit of chore to him after a day of school. I like to make it part of every day life but fun too. When Post from Panda got in touch I thought this would really help with encouraging his reading.
Post from Panda is a very simple idea but a genius one all at the same time. Once you subscribe your child gets a letter through the post once a week. The letters have the same amount of words as a school reading book and are laid out in easy to read, colourful sections. The letters support the National Curriculum and phonics programs for children in Reception. It’s so nice to feel you are doing something at home to support their reading at school but it doesn’t feel like school work to them.
I received a letter for grown ups first explaining that the letters were on their way and some emails with lots of really useful information about helping your child when they are learning to read. When Little Man received his first letter he was over the moon. He loved that his name was on the envelope and he recognised that it was for him straight away. Getting a letter that he could then read himself gave him a huge sense of achievement and really made him and me realise how far he has come with his reading in just a few weeks. He was so pleased when I told him that Panda would write to him again and to look out when the Postman came. Children often need reasons to learn something and these letters provide a great one. Little Man now understands that he must be able to read to be able to read his post!
If you would like to know more about Post from Panda or try it out they have a free trial running if you sign up before 30th November. We have loved it so far and can’t wait to carry on receiving the letters. Keep an eye on my Instagram to see how we are getting on through the rest of the academic year.
I was sent a subscription to Post From Panda in return for an honest review. As always all opinions are 100% my own.
