6 Books For Starting School

Last week I posted some tips on how to get your little one prepared for school. I had some lovely feedback from some of you to say you found the post useful so I thought I would carry on sharing what I have learnt in the last 8 months as a new school mum. Today it is 5 books for starting school.

One of the things I found that really helped to prepare Little Man for school was talking to him about going and what it would be like. The easiest way I found to do this was by reading stories about it. The conversation wasn’t too pressured that way and Little Man was happier to sit down for a story rather than for a deep and meaningful!

Here are my top 5 books to read to your little one when they are about to start school.

Harry & The Dinosaurs Go To School by Ian Whybrow

This is a great story if your little one is very attached to a certain toy or has a comforter. Harry is upset when he can’t take his dinosaurs with him to school, the story talks through this and the prospect of making new friends too.

I Am Too Absolutely Small For School by Clarice Bean

Little Man was a big fan of Charlie & Lola so this was a great book to read to him. Lola is very nervous about going to school but she only talks about feeling this way through her invisible friend. Her big brother Charlie tries to settle her mind about it. This is my favourite of the five books as it is a great mix of humour and reassurance.

Whiffy Wilson – The Wolf Who Wouldn’t Go To School by Caryl Hart

If your little one is thinking that school is going to be boring and no fun then this is the book for them. Whiffy is convinced he doesn’t want to go to school but his friend convinces him to try it. He ends up getting gold stars for all the good things he does and loves it. This is a great one for children that respond well to praise and to show them they will receive it at school and maybe some rewards too!

Boris Starts School by Carrie Weston

This story is just the sweetest. It’s all about Boris the bear joining a new school but all of his classmates are scared of him. Boris is really sad about not fitting in, the story unfolds to Boris standing up against some bullies and showing his classmates how lovely he really is. This is a lovely story about making everyone feel welcome and accepting everyone.

Starting School Sticker Book by Usborne

This one is a little different to the others but if you and your little one are fans of the Usborne sticker books then this will be great. This book follows a typical school day with spaces to stick uniform, PE kit, lunch, etc. This is a great interactive book for talking about the school day and the structure of school life.

The First Day at School (Personalised) by Born Gifted

If you are looking to use something a bit more personal to your child then try this personalised first day at school book from Born Gifted. It is the story of Bunny’s first day of school and the ups and downs of his day.

So there we go, I hope these book ideas help. If you have read any useful ones, please pop them in the comments.
