How to avoid feeling anxious when you join a gym


Joining a gym can be a great way to get regular exercise into your life – and working out can be a great help with managing stress and anxiety in and of itself. However, for a lot of people who find new situations to be an anxiety trigger, making those first visits to a new gym can be incredibly intimidating. If you really want to start reaping the benefits of being a gym goer, but find you feel anxious just thinking about going to the gym for the first time, here are some tips:

 

Remember that most people at the gym aren’t looking at you

There is this misconception that people at the gym are busy judging everybody who comes in, or watching them struggle with new exercises. This goes hand in hand with the imagined type of person people tend to think gyms are full of – super fit, athletic young people with godlike bodies. In reality, gyms are a lot more mundane than this, so don’t let your imagination or stereotypes from TV cause you to fear something that isn’t real. Most gym goers are normal people trying to fit exercise into their lives or shift unwanted weight, and unless you go to a specialist gym aimed at bodybuilders or athletes, you’ll find that you’ll be just the same as everyone else. Equally, most people just like to put their headphones on and get through their workout – they’re not concerned with who else is there, let alone with judging them!

Boost your confidence with a few things you love

Even when you are realistic about what the gym will be like compared with the myths, you may still feel like you need an extra boost to your confidence to be able to work out in a new place full of people. Give yourself that little boost in a way that works for you, whether it is playing music you find empowering through noise cancelling headphones, or wearing something you really love. You could consider treating yourself to some special gear to wear to make you feel your best on those early visits, such as some gorgeous Balenciaga sneakers. Work with a personal trainer

If you feel nervous about what to actually do at the gym, or are worried about things like gym etiquette, it can be a good idea to do a session or two with a personal trainer. They can ease you into things, answer any questions, and make sure that you’re with someone who knows what they’re doing when it’s your first time in that environment. Most gyms have trainers you can book for this, so inquire about it!

Once you’ve gotten past the first couple of visits, you’ll soon find the gym a welcoming place, so don’t let anxiety stop you from getting in shape!
